Gilas Pilipinas opens its gold medal defense in the SEA Games 2025 men’s basketball 5×5 tournament against Malaysia on Sunday, December 14, at 12:30pm. Norman Black is calling the shots for Gilas Pilipinas in their quest to continue imposing their dominance in the Southeast Asian Games 2025 in Thailand.

Gilas Pilipinas kick off their campaign in the Southeast Asian Games 2025 men’s 5x5 basketball tournament against Malaysia Sunday, Dec. 13.

Match unfurls at 12:30 p.m. (Philippine time) in Bangkok, Thailand, with the Nationals aiming to set the tone early as the defending champion.

The road to the opener has been anything but smooth for the Filipino dribblers.

In the weeks leading up to the biennial meet, Gilas was forced to navigate persistent lineup uncertainty due to the organizers’ constantly shifting eligibility rules.

The most significant blow came with the late exclusion of naturalized Filipino Justin Brownlee, prompting head coach Norman Black and his staff to reconfigure the roster just days before competition.

From an initial pool that featured Brownlee alongside Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Jason Brickman and Remy Martin, only Matthew Wright, Thirdy Ravena, Ray Parks Jr., Jamie Malonzo and Veejay Pre remained.

To bolster the group, Gilas added PBA star Robert Bolick, whose scoring punch and playmaking will be central to the team’s offense.

The roster is rounded out by rookie Dalph Panopio, veterans Abu Tratter and Von Pessumal, and reliable big man Justin Chua.

Collegiate standout Cedrick Manzano also made the cut, while Poy Erram was tapped as a last-minute replacement for injured forward Allen Liwag.

Despite the turbulence, Gilas enters the opener focused on execution and continuity.

The matchup with Malaysia offers a chance to establish rhythm, test rotations and reaffirm the Philippines’ standing as the region’s benchmark in men’s basketball.
